Leratong Pre-school | As with all the Gumboots projects, it is difficult to visit Leratong at the moment, but talking to Dimakatso, the senior teacher, she speaks positively about the learners and the school in general … “The children seem to be coping emotionally, although a few are struggling physically as their clothes are very inadequate for these cold winter mornings.” She said that she isn’t able to interact with the parents these days as they just drop and collect their children at the gate. But she senses that families are not suffering too much with Covid illness per se, but it’s the crippling financial impact that’s affecting them through loss of jobs and family income.
As with everywhere else in today’s new world, the enormous upheaval brought about by the Covid-19 crisis is being acutely felt in Alex, particularly with food shortages, school closures and loss of jobs. While times are tough and uncertain, Gumboots and its partners are providing leadership to a community doing its best under very difficult circumstances.
As a result of the pandemic, the normal activities of the projects that Gumboots supports have now largely been curtailed. This, however, has not prevented our resourceful and energetic project leaders from redirecting their efforts to helping alleviate some of the hardship. Together we’ve been hard at work communicating, adapting and learning in these challenging times.
While South Africa appears to be experiencing fewer Covid-19 cases and deaths when compared with other countries in the world – and there are many theories why this may be so – we are being fiercely hit by the spin‑off waves causing loss of jobs, unemployment, hunger and crime … and this continues to be acutely felt in Alex. While times are tough and confusing, Gumboots and its partners are providing leadership and the community is continuing to do its best under the difficult circumstances.
This Gift Aid activity outing was to the community-connected children’s museum at Constitution Hill promoting children’s rights and pioneering exceptional learning experiences that inspire young kids to create, discover and connect. And the children from Leratong did just that.
In lieu of an activity outing as such, we decided it would be a worthwhile exercise to give the school a lasting gift … so we’ve purchased five boxes of MagnaTiles – durable, magnetic building shapes that spark creativity in children of all ages and help to develop fine motor skills while engaging in imaginative play.
